Silkies come in a variety of colors: White Silkies, Blue Silkies, Gray (Grey) Silkies, Buff Silkies, Black Silkies, and Red Silkies. Silkies are an ancient breed, dating at least from 13th century China. This chicken breed is hardy and is suited for both cold and hot climates, but may not do well in extremely stormy weather because of its plummage. Silkies are very docile and friendly and make wonderful birds for a backyard flock and are an excellent choice for children to raise. Silkies lay small eggs that are usually cream to very light brown in color. It takes roughly two to three Silkie eggs to equal one regular chicken egg. Silkies also have a bantam (miniature) counterpart.

Speckled Sussex Rooster

Developed 200 years ago in England, the Sussex breed comes in several varities: Speckled, Light, Buff, Red, and Silver. These chickens are extremely hardy and adapt well to very cold climates. They are quite friendly, calm, and gentle and do not mind being held. Like the kind tempered Buff Orpington, Sussex chickens are a great breed for children to raise. Sussex chickens are a wonderful addition to a backyard flock with their tremendous egg productivity, laying eggs that are off-white to light brown in color and medium to large in size. Recently there has been an olive green colored egg developed in Light Sussex breeds, but these green egg layers are still quite rare. Sussex chickens also have a bantam (miniature) counterpart.

Black Australorps were developed from the Orpington breed in Australia. These chickens are very hardy, especially in the cold, and are quite friendly and docile. Because of their kind personality, Australorps are an excellent breed choice for children who want to raise chickens. Black Australorps make an outstanding backyard flock member because of their mild temperament and their tendency to lay large amounts of medium size brown eggs. In 1922-1923 six Australorp hens broke the world record for the most eggs layed in a year: 1,857 eggs. On average, a healthy Australorp hen will lay approximately 250 eggs per year. Australorps also have a bantam (miniature) counterpart.
